Robert Arciero, MD

Robert A. Arciero MD was born in El Paso, Texas, the son of a career Army soldier. His family moved throughout his childhood but the majority of his early years he grew up in Allegany, New York, home of St. Bonaventure University. He graduated from St. Bonaventure University with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and then matriculated at Georgetown School of Medicine and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1980.
Dr. Arciero was an ROTC and Health Professions Scholarship recipient and began his own career in Military medicine in 1980.]. After his surgical internship at Madigan Army Medical Center, Tacoma, Washington, he was stationed in Bremerhaven ,Germany as a general medical officer for 2 years treating a vast array of primary care conditions. He then returned to Madigan Army Medical Center and completed his Orthopaedic residency in 1987. During his residency, he trained in the University of Washington program at Swedish Hospital, Harborview Medical Center as well as Gillette Childrens Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota.
He completed his sports medicine fellowship with John A. Feagin,MD in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and at Keller Army Hospital, West Point, New York.
From 1987-2000, Dr. Arciero was a staff surgeon at Keller Army Hospital, West Point, NY and during this time cared for cadets, soldiers and their families. He was team physician for Army Athletics and fellowship director of the John A. Feagin MD Orthopaedic Sports medicine fellowship. In this capacity, he trained fellows and began clinical research on first-time anterior dislocation in young athletes and complex knee ligament injuries.
He was also deployed with the 46th Combat Support Hospital during Operation Desert Shield in 1990-1991 and received the Bronze Star. Dr. Arciero retired from military service in 2000.
From Sept. 2000 to the present, Dr. Arciero has worked at University of Connecticut where he currently serves as Chief of Sports Medicine, Fellowship Director for the University of Connecticut and head Team Orthopaedic physician for the UConn Department of athletics. He has taught hundreds of students, residents, and fellows. He is dedicated to complex shoulder and knee soft tissue injuries and has published over 250 peer-reviewed publications, 50 book chapters and has made hundreds of national and international presentations on these topics.

He is devoted to his family: wife Cathy of 43 years, 5 children and 6 grandchildren. He enjoys sports, drinking a good IPA, listening to rock and the blues and playing guitar.
