Dr. Nelson is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota. He is the Director of Sports Medicine for TRIA Orthopedics and the University of Minnesota. Dr. Nelson serves as the Medical Director for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Minnesota and is a team physician for several of the Gopher teams including Men’s Hockey and Basketball. Dr. Nelson is also a team physician for the Minnesota Wild hockey club. Dr. Nelson is the Medical Director for the TRIA Research and Education Center within the Health Partners Research Institute. He is the principal investigator or co-PI of multiple clinical trials. Dr. Nelson has published extensively on sports medicine injuries of the knee and shoulder. Dr Nelson is fellowship trained in sports medicine with an interest in articular cartilage injuries, complex knee injuries, and shoulder instability. He completed his residency at the University of Colorado and his fellowship at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Dr. Nelson served on active duty with the Army for 15 years.
